Objectives:1. To investigate the current status of the self-learning ability and the core competency of operating room nurses in Nanjing and Suzhou, Jiangsu province.2. To discuss the relationship between the self-learning ability and the core competency.3. To offer solutions to promoting the self-learning ability and the core competency of operating room nurses and provide evidence for continuing nursing education.Methods:By random sampling, a survey consisting of Nurse Self-learning Ability Rating Scale and Registered Nurse Core Competence Scale was administrated to 508 operating room nurses in Nanjing and Suzhou, Jiangsu province.Results:1. The total score of operating room nurse self-leaning ability was 125.97±18.90.46.94% nurses’total score of the self-leaning ability more than 135 divided into good ability,53.06%nurses’total score of 85~135 is the medium level ability. The item scored the highest was self motivational beliefs 53.25±8.45,the item scored the least was self evaluation14.58±2.46.2. Age, practicing year, marital status, title and position could significantly affect operating room nurse self-leaning ability (P<0.05).<25 years old, working time<5 years, unmarried and nurse (position) nurses were significantly lower than others in nurses self-leaning ability (P<0.05). Nurses on day shift, nurses who were leading in section(responsible group leader, teacher nurse, specialty nurse)often participating in academic exchange meetings and receiving further training were significantly higher than others in nurses’self-leaning ability (P<0.05).3. The average score of operating room nurses’core competency was 161.79±31.66 in the moderate level. Critical thinking and Research was proved to be the lowest capacity with an average score 24.71±6.18. The highest score was law and ethic practice, being 25.29±5.61.4. Age, practicing year, marital status, title and position could significantly affect operating room nurse core competency (P<0.05).<25 years old, working time<5 years, unmarried and nurse (position) nurses were significantly lower than others in nurses’core competency (P<0.05).5. Shift, the frequency of nurse rotation could significantly affect nurses’core competency in operating room nurse (P<0.05). Night shift, inexperienced operating nurses were significantly lower than others in nurses’core competency (P<0.05). Nurses on day shift and the frequency of nurse rotation (>3) were significantly higher than others in nurses’core competency (P<0.05).6. Operating room nurses who were leading in section(responsible group leader, teacher nurse, specialty nurse) often participating in academic exchange meetings and receiving further training were significantly higher than others in nurses’core competency (P<0.05).7. The operating room nurses in different level of hospital could not significantly affect the self-leaning ability and could not significantly affect core competency except critical thinking research and clinical nursing. (P>0.05).8. The self-learning ability was positively correlated with the core competency (r=0.786,P<0.01)Conclusions:1. According to the standard of CIRN (The total score less than 110 divided into low ability,The total score of 110-165 is the medium level ability, The total score of 165~220 is high capacity),operating nurses’core competency from eighteen hospitals in Nanjing and Suzhou, Jiangsu province was at the middle level. They are competent enough to provide health care.2. Law and ethic practice in operating nurses’core competency was proved to be the highest capacity while the critical thinking and research capacity being the lowest, which needs to be strengthened.3. Administrators should pay more attention to newly graduated nurses’low seniority, and night shift nurses, take appropriate measures to enhance those nurses’ core competency.4. Administrators could promote operating nurses’core competency by promoting (served as responsible group leader, teacher nurse, and specialty nurse), shifting, participating in academic meetings and further training and etc.5. Operating room nurse self-leaning ability from eighteen hospitals in Nanjing and Suzhou, Jiangsu province was at the middle level, was positively correlated with the core competency. The higher the level of self-leaning ability, the better the ability of core competency. Administrators could cultivate interest in the self-leaning ability, mainly focus on self-assessment and task analysis.6. Newly graduated nurses, low seniority, and night shift nurses were significantly lower than others in nurses’self-leaning ability.7. Administrators could help nurse to train the ability of Critical thinking and Research according to the influence factor of the self-learning ability and the core competency in operating room nurses, encourage the interest and attitude of nursing research, bring into play exemplary vanguard role of nurses who were leading in section (responsible group leader, teacher nurse, specialty nurse). Administrators could use multi-level training methods to improve operating room nurses’ comprehensive power, for example:Intractable case discussion, situational simulation, holism operating room nursing care etc. Administrators could find out the common training ways of self-learning ability and core competency, could not totally separate them from nurse training.
