Hong Kong films have formed a set of mature commercial system and type mode after nearly80years of development. Hong Kong films flourished in the1950s and1960s, and in the1970s they begun their transformation along with the economic development of Hong Kong, at the same time, Hong Kong films were strong shocked and went into a dismal period for the reason of audiences’fickleness, the rise and popularity of the television industry in Hong Kong. With the decline of big radios and the independent production were coming into play, Hong Kong films need freshmen to join urgently. From the late1970s to the mid-1980s, a large number of young directors about30-year-old went out the broadcast station then stepped into filmdom and made some cutting-edge debut. Most of these young directors have the experiences of studying abroad and working at TV stations, and their films which have different themes and technical styles broke the old style and model of Hong Kong films which turned a new leaf because of their appearance as a cardiotonic. People call the new trend and fashion brought by these young directors the Hong Kong new wave cinema. However, it didn’t last long. The Hong Kong new wave cinema soon combined into the mainstream and achieved the modernization and internationalization. The Hong Kong new wave cinema droved the changes and innovations in creative teams, beauty senses, film types, film languages, production technologies, and so on. At the same time, it made a big difference for Hong Kong films development and advancing into ranks of world cinema, even these days, in21st century.The introduction briefly organizes the existing achievements of the previous studied on the Hong Kong new wave cinema, and leads to the argument, the theoretical value, practical significance and characteristics. There are three chapters in total. The first chapter combs the beginning of Hong Kong new wave cinema. It analyses the low-mood period Hong Kong films through Hong Kong society’s political, economic and cultural factors, and the birth of Hong Kong new wave cinema is the inevitable product of Hong Kong film development. Chapter two teases the development of Hong Kong new wave cinema and analyses its "new part". Chapter three marks the end of Hong Kong new wave cinema with its reasons, and summarizes the contributions and inspirations. The conclusion part is the general description and evaluation of Hong Kong new wave cinema.
