A Study On Syntactic Linearity In English-Chinese Simultaneous Interpreting

Simultaneous interpretation is rapid,so there is no spare time for interpreter to adjust the order of the sentence.Syntactic linearity is always applied to simultaneous interpretation,so that the transformation between Chinese and English can be achieved.However,there exists difference between Chinese and English,which makes syntactic linearity hard to achieve,without passing on complete meaning of the source language.Based on previous researches,Cameron’s last speech in Scotland before referendum is chosen to summarize the concerted application of syntactic linearity and other skills in simultaneous interpretation.By research,it turns out that syntactic linearity is conclusive.Moreover,syntactic linearity shall be applied to English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting with other skills,such as,anticipation,adjustment of word order,simplification,etc.From theoretical aspect,based on effort model and minimalist program,this thesis explores the application of syntactic linearity in SI.And from empirical aspect,this thesis analyzes some common skills in SI,by combining analysis of 31 SI learners’ performance.
