This practice report analyses how the author prepares, proceeds and reviews aneconomics class interpreting task within the framework of Gutt·s Relevance TheoreticApproach to Translation (1991).With the development of globalization, China has been actively involved in theworld·s economy. It has become a fashion in the business circle to initiate Sino-foreign educational courses, exchange programmes and study tours in foreigncountries, etc. Therefore the society demands interpreters with good commands offoreign languages (particularly English), and adequate knowledge of economics,business management and current affairs. The author was recommended as a classinterpreter for the Chamber of Commerce for Entrepreneurs of a MBA course. Thispractice report aims at studying how the author finishes her task as an economics classinterpreter for an American professor invited to Guangzhou.The report intends to approach how the author combines the Relevance TheoreticApproach to Translation with procedures of her interpreting practice: construction of ashared cognitive environment with collected materials for effective preparation, anduse of different interpreting strategies to produce good-quality target language outputsduring interpreting performance. In post-task assessment, the author reflects on andsums up her performance with the audience·s feedbacks. She also gives the translationof her in-class interpretation for comparison and improvement.The paper, by adopting research methodologies: theoretic deduction and exampleanalysis, analyses the transcription of the in-class interpretation, generalizes specificinterpreting tactics and concludes other difficulties. In class interpreting, the author uses the Relevance theoretic concepts of a) speaker·s formative intention andcommunicative intention to help her understand original utterance; and b) contextualeffects and hearer·s processing efforts to control the quality of her target utterance.She uses her actual in-class interpreting examples to generalize and analyse herperformance, and testifies that Relevance Theoretic Approach to Translation plays aguiding role in the class interpreting practice. She summarizes her pragmaticinterpreting strategies from the perspective of the Approach: direct and indirectinterpreting, addition, omission, explanation, reorganization, correction and bridging.In previous studies, little is approached about class interpreting. This practicereport is not an academic article of total theoretical explanations, but an analysis of aninterpreting practice with the Relevance Theoretic Approach to Translation. It is asystematic conclusion of an interpreting task. After analysing and summarizing herpractice, the author understands better the dynamic mental activity in a specificinterpreting process; and learns how to comprehend the speaker·s informativeintention and communicative intention more accurately.In all, the report is of great importance to the author in her academic life andfuture career, and it could be helpful to other interpreters· practice.
