A Report On Whispered Interpreting Practice Of An English Talk Show

With the deepening development of economic integration,international cooperation and cross-cultural communication are in great need among all the countries.As a tool for promoting this communication,interpreting is being widely utilized and moving towards professionalization and variety.Whispered interpreting,a form of simultaneous interpreting takes place on various occasions.This report focuses on the author’s whispered interpreting experience,elaborate on how she finished the task under the guidance of Gutt’s Theoretic Approach to Translation(Gutt1991/2000)based on Relevance Theory(Sperber and Wilson 1986/1995)which holds that communication represents an ostensive-inferential process.The communicator produces a stimulus which makes it mutually manifest to the communicator and audience that the communicator intends,by means of this stimulus,to make manifest or more manifest to the audience a set of assumptions.The two communicating parties seek for the relevance of the information based on its contextual assumptions to understand the speaker’s informative intention and communicative intention.They make inference to achieve contextual effects and then find the optimal relevance to achieve the communicative goals.According to the two theories we hold that interpreting mirrors a cross-cultural dynamic communicative process with speaker,interpreter and listeners involved.When the speaker produces a stimulus,the interpreter starts to build his or her own cognitive environment with the information stored in mind.Then the interpreter endeavors to make inference based on the speaker’s utterances’ lexical information,logical information and encyclopedic information to achieve contextual effects.Meanwhile,it is appropriate for the interpreter to take the listener’s cognitive environment into account and adopt the appropriate interpreting strategies to convey the speaker’s intentions through target linguistic choices guided by optimal relevance.Therefore,Relevance Theoretic Approach to Translation provides a strong interpretation for interpreting.The author aims to deliberate on her whispered interpreting practice of an English interview within the Relevance Theoretic framework.This practice report analyses how the author prepares the task and adopts simultaneous interpreting tactics combined with the application of Gutt’s viewpoints to her whispered interpreting practice.The thesis summarizes the major findings and limitations of the report and then makes some suggestions.It may offer some references for future research and interpreting.
