The Report On Consecutive Interpreting At The2013China-ASEAN Seminar

This paper constitutes a practice report mainly on Chinese to English consecutive interpreting. Entrusted by Guangxi University, the author assumed the role as the consecutive interpreter in2013China-ASEAN Seminar on May15th,2013. As one of the flagship programs in China-ASEAN cooperation, the China-ASEAN Seminar involves participants from government departments and institutions from ASEAN countries. The report dwells upon a wide range of professional and non-professional issues the author has bumped into in this interpreting practice.The interpreting practice is on the premise of the theoretical analysis of Venuti on the translator’s invisibility as well as the theoretical views of Dr. Zhan Cheng on the mediating role of the interpreters. The report centers on four major aspects of introduction, process description, case studies and conclusion. In the introduction, the report describes such issues as how the task comes to the author, what is the nature of the task and what are the requirements. In the process description, the report elaborates upon how the author conducts the pre-interpreting preparation and the significance of the pre-interpreting preparation. In the case studies, the report details such respects as the background information, the selection of words and expressions, the transfer of parts of speech and angles of view, the interpreter’s role as a mediator, null subject sentences, sentence combination and division as well as the responses to emergencies. In closing, the report makes a terse and concise conclusion, encompassing the thoughts and gains of the author from the interpreting practice.Predicated upon the detailed analysis and case studies of the interpreting practice, the report comes to the following conclusions. First, a good attitude serves as the prerequisite. Second, the pre-interpreting preparation, both in its narrow and broad senses, can never be neglected or belittled, for it is of crucial importance to the interpreting process. Third, language proficiency and interpreting skills constitute the very basis for the interpreting practice. Fourth, making a review and summary is indispensible, for it can enable the interpreters to progress faster. All in all, the interpreting, which calls for the interpreters’continuous study and practice, is by no means an easy task.
