The aim of this study is to establish an appropriate PTA (Primary Trait Analysis)assessment model for the MTI theses, which is to meet the characteristics and therequirements of MTI education. Due to the lack of precedent and mature assessmentsystems for MTI theses, the present MTI training institutes continue to use theassessment method of traditional academic theses of MA that mainly calls for ahigh-level academic value and does not conform to the initial education objectives ofMTI and the different thesis modes suggested for MTI students. This situation deviatesfrom the practical aims of setting MTI. Thus the study, based on the contrast of theeducational objectives of MA with that of MTI education, analyzes the limitations ofthe traditional assessment methods of MA in the process of MTI thesis assessment. Inaddition, the study employs the PTA approach and devises an assessment rubric withspecific scoring scales based on the Translation Competence Models put forward byPACTE group and provides suggestions and standards for MTI students in the processof thesis writing. This study hopes to promote the development of translation research by devisinga reliable, valid, holistic thesis assessment rubric that is uniquely suited to theeducational objectives of MTI program. With the aid of the devised assessment modelwith MTI characteristics, MTI students can refer to the detailed parameters expectedby the thesis assessors for a qualified theses of proposed modes in the process ofwriting so as to improve the quality of their theses. The study attempts to contribute tothe MTI-related research and narrow down the gap between the educational objectiveand status quo of MTI.
