This is a translation report based on the Chinese rendition of MGC600-F(Feeder)Product Manual which is published by Power Generation ABB Australia Pty Ltd.The text contains a lot of electric power terms, and frequently employs passive voices, attributive clauses, complicated sentences, figures, and tables, which requires high translation competence of a translator. The PACTE translation competence model(hereinafter referred to as PACTE model)presented by the PACTE research group(hereinafter referred as PACTE group)can be fully verified in this project. It includes five subcompetences(bilingual subcompetence,extra-linguistic subcompetence, strategic subcompetence, instrumental subcompetence, and knowledge about translation subcompetence)and psycho-physiological components. The author divides the whole translation process into three stages, namely, preparations for translation, first draft of translation, and after-translation management.Taking the problems encountered in translating and the solutions proposed as the focus of study, and based on the PACTE model, this report analyzes and summarizes the translation competences that the author has acquired or is still lacking, and proposes some ideas on translation competence construction for MTI students. This report is composed of five parts.Firstly, the report summarizes the significance, purpose, and structure of the project and the source text.Secondly, the report briefly introduces the PACTE model as a theoretical basis for further discussion.Thirdly, with the PACTE model as a reference, the report analyzes the translation competences reflected in the specific tasks, problems, and solutions in the course of translation.Fourthly, the report discusses how to improve the translation competences of MTI students from the perspectives of MTI students, universities, and enterprises which employ MTI students: MTI students should broaden their bilingual and interdisciplinary reading, enrich their practical experience, and attach importance to the integration between theories and practice.Universities need to set up programs related to CAT tools, translation as an industry, encyclopedic knowledge, and translation practice, and employ expert translators to participate in translation teaching.Enterprises need to provide general training about translation as an industry for MTI students, share advantageous resources and strengthen cooperation with universities. The construction of translation competence is a systematic process which demands concerted efforts from MTI students, universities, and enterprises.
