Based on the bilingual sub-competence,extra-linguistic sub-competence and strategic sub-competence of PACTE model, the thesis conducts a research on the first version and the published version of European Coatings Journal's translation.Through comparative analysis, quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis, the thesis will identify the most common errors in technical translation and study the translation competence of the translators. The author hopes that the study could provide some enlightenment for the cultivation of translators in the future.Chapter one is an introduction to the research significance, research questions, research methodology and structure of the thesis.Chapter two is a review of studies on translation competence at home and abroad as well as studies on technical translation and errors in technical translation.Chapter three is the theoretical foundation of the thesis.Chapter four is the main body of the thesis,in which case study and data analysis will be carried out based on the data collected.Chapter five is conclusion. The research shows that, the most common errors in the translation of European Coatings Journal are errors in translating general words, errors in terminology translation, errors caused by misunderstanding contexts, translationese, errors caused by lacking sentence elements, incorrect collocations and omission. These errors reflect that the translators lack certain knowledge and translation sub-competences.Therefore,in terms of the frequencies of these errors, the bilingual sub-competence of the translators is weaker than extra-linguistic sub-competence and strategic sub-competence.Particularly,their grammatical-lexical knowledge and pragmatic knowledge are in severe shortage.Besides, the translators lack subject knowledge, which manifests their weakness in extra-linguistic sub-competence.Furthermore,the translators have a certain level of strategic sub-competence,but word-for-word translation causes lots of errors, which shows that the translators cannot choose a proper translation method in translation. The result shows that the priorities should begiven to the improvement of the translators' bilingual sub-competence,especially grammatical-lexical knowledge as well as pragmatic knowledge, the accumulation of subject knowledge and the training of translation methods in the years to come.
