On C-E Translation Of Political Hard News From The Perspective Of Manipulation Theory

Scholars have studied on the subject of translation of political news in China fromseveral aspects. However, the study from the perspective of Manipulation Theory is only afew. The thesis aims to study the manipulation in C-E translation of political hard news byanalyzing news reports on same facts by different media, based on Manipulation Theory.Chinese political hard news lies in two categories. One is the short news that containswhen, where, who, what, why and how of a political event. The second is news report thatpresents the full text or extract of a political report, communiqué, top leader’s speech, etc.The thesis aims to analyze the translation of the latter one. Since the patron of majorChinese news media is Chinese government, Chinese media are devoted to promote theimage of China and Chinese government and defend the ideology of Chinese society intranslating Chinese political hard news. The wording, reporting angles are positive. Whilerepresenting their patron’s ideology and interests, Western media may adopt negativewording, reporting angle and quotation of remarks by certain people to weaken the imageof China, Chinese government, and the ideology of Chinese society in translating Chinesepolitical hard news into English. The similarities Chinese news media and Western newsmedia share in translating Chinese political hard news are that the full texts of politicalreports, communiqués or political speeches by top leaders are not presented, only thegeneral ideas or summaries given; and the structure of the translated news reports isadjusted abiding by the news writing format of Western news report.Through analysis the thesis draws a conclusion that the three elements of ManipulationTheory have great influence on C-E translation of political hard news. Therefore, the threeelements must be handled prudently in the C-E translation process of political hard news.
