From the current research findings on interpreting process in cognitive science andpsycholinguistics and through four years of observation and conversations with students inSchool of Translation Studies, XISU, the author describes the typical problems that studentinterpreters have encountered in listening comprehension: the failure in identification ofphonetic sound, analysis of meaning at sentence and discourse level, recognition of thelogic network of discourse, and the insufficient world knowledge. Owing to inadequateattention devoted to training of listening comprehension by researches abroad as well asneglect of domestic training models in developing self-training methods, many Chinesestudent interpreters have no clear idea how to overcome those difficulties. After analyzingthe possible root causes to these difficulties, the thesis, guided by research findings incognitive science and psycholinguistics, proposes self-training methods as a supplement toin-class skill training for Chinese student interpreters in the hope to help solve theirproblems in listening comprehension and lay a solid foundation for the interpreting-skilltraining thereafter.
