| As a prevalent phenomenon in simultaneous interpreting (SI), omission has agreat bearing on the effect of communication. Since the Cooperative Principle (CP)serves as a guideline for verbal communication, its four maxims are well grounded ifapplied in the study on omissions in simultaneous interpreting, a special mode ofcommunication. This paper attempts to study omission as a phenomenon under theguidance of the Cooperative Principle. Different from the previous studies whichadvocate using omission as a processing strategy, omissions in this paper are regardedas translation departures. The author first illustrates omissions’ prevalence due tointerpreter’s limited processing capacity and difficulties in TV simultaneousinterpreting. Then, with typical examples in transcription of TV simultaneousinterpreting, this paper is intended to analyze omissions’ impact on the communicativeeffect. Results of the study verify that omissions violating four maxims of theCooperative Principle in most cases fail to serve the purposes of simultaneousinterpreting, and such omissions should be avoided to the greatest extent in order toachieve high-quality interpretation and successful communication. |
