This thesis seeks to propose a set of guidelines for translating the aviationindustrial technical texts from the perspective of seven standards of Textlinguisticsproposed by Professor Beaugrande and Professor Dressler in1981. The data resourcesof this paper are extracted from the foreign aviation industrial documentations, such ascomprehensive aero-engine introductions, part specifications, design drawings,technical papers, quality standards, inspection criteria, email correspondence fortechnical, quality and business support, plus daily on-site technical interpretation,thereby discovering the significance of translation in the aviation industry.However, most of the current translation research has been focusing on translationskills or techniques; only little effort has been put in theoretical study. This paperstarts with a preliminary account of the characteristics of aviation sci-tech texts oftruth-telling, logical patterns, compact structures, uncountable terms and terminologies,concise wording and precise data, combined the status-quo of EST research employedin text analysis theory. The writer wishes to explore how the seven standards areapplied to the sci-tech text analysis, and to establish a analysis model for the sci-techtext translation, that is to understand the original text, to learn the author’s intention, toconsider the context, to transfer information, to mirror intertext, and finally to realizefull readability.
