A Practice Report On The Localization Translation Of The Atkins Website Project

In the context of economic globalization, the rapid rise of the localizationindustry contributes to the boom of the translation market. As an important content ofthe whole localization, localization translation adopting domesticating translationstrategy puts the target users or readers in the first place to ensure that the product orservice can obtain the greatest degree of acceptance in the target market. During theinternship, the author participated in the localization translation of Atkins websiteproject which belongs to website localization. Its localization translation has bothgeneral characteristics and its own features. For instance, it’s tendentious in marketand technical in profession. Hence in the field of localization translation it isrepresentative. Therefore, a full range of discussion for this project was carried andpractical and empirical summaries were made.First, the overall localization workflow of Atkins website project which clearlyshowed the location and stage of localization translation in the localization process ofthe project was demonstrated. Based on that point, the localization translationworkflow, which the author was personally involved, was described from threephases: preparation before translation, translating and summary after translation.From this part, persons who are translators or who will be engaged in translation canenhance the understanding of localization industry and localization translation andrealize the necessity and superiority of strictly controlled workflow. Secondly, muchattention was focused on the most typical and prominent four aspects of translationof this project from three dimensions: word, sentence, and text. They are the disposeof prepositions, the determination of jargons, the translation of long sentences, andthe adjustment of cohesive devices. Through the comparison and reflection of the original English text, the author’s translation and the editor’s translation, the author’smental activities during translation was reproduced, the practical application oftranslation theories and translation skills was represented, the experience wassummed up, and eventually the final translation which will bring inspiration andreference for the translation work of similar projects was reached. Thirdly, problemsand deficiencies of this project were pointed out from two angles: localizationtranslation workflow and localization translation quality. These are consistencyproblem and translationese problem which are both the problems of this project andtypical problems of localization translation to be urgently solved. According to theproblems and shortcomings, the corresponding solutions presenting the author’sthoughts and views was given to help promote the improvement of localizationtranslation workflow and the progress of localization translation quality. Finally, fiveprofessional qualities which translators of localization should possess wereindividually discussed. They are serious attitude, capability of electronic technology,capability of translation practice, ability to take advantage of their own majorbackgrounds and to learn from others’ strong points to offset their weakness, as wellas communication and teamwork skills. That will provides some ideas for the layoutof MTI curriculum, the cultivation of localization translators, and theself-improvement of localization translators.This highlight of this practice report lays on that the author not only found theproblems, but also actively explored to offer the corresponding solutions withinnovation based on translation practice and experience. This practice reportpossesses practical significance for the localization translation workflow, thelocalization translation practice and the cultivation of localization translators ofsimilar projects.
