Witold Lutoslawski, Polish, is one of the greatest composers in the second half of the20th century, who plays a significant role in the history of western music. His works are generally of high quality, with the spirit of exploration and originality. He integrated uncertainties in aleatory music with rational control of classical music, which spawned the composition technique of limited aleatorism. Meanwhile, he was creative in structure, timbre and so on. His works have become the focus of instrumentalists and composers.This paper elaborates the characteristics of Lutoslawski’s composition with textual descriptions and graphs of music score by analyzing his work, Livre pour orchestra. This paper has two chapters. The first chapter introduces Lutoslawski’s life and his achievements. The second chapter is the analysis of his work about musical structure, pitch organization, techniques of polyphony and orchestration. Livre pour orchestra is one of his representative works, from which you can appreciate the composer’s unique artistic personality and style.
