On Conciseness In Translation

Recent years have witnessed an increasing interest in English psychological works, and their translated versions are popular among professionals and the public in China. The source text is excerpted from Falling in Love Why We Choose the Lovers We Choose written in2005by the Israel psychologist Ayala Malach Pines who had published many social psychological works on human relationship. And the chosen part is meaningful for translation for its distinct style of writing, substantial contents and well-organized structure.This thesis aims to find the strategies and methods to avoid redundancy in translation and produce concise Chinese translation. Specifically, it focuses on finding out and removing redundancy in information and structure.This thesis consists of five parts. The first part is the content and purpose of the research and the introduction of the author and the book translated. The second part briefly analyzes English psychological works in general and this book in particular, and points out the elements to be noticed in translating this text and the problems and challenges the author as translator faces. The third part discusses the definition of the conciseness of Chinese, the types of redundancy, and the reasons that cause the redundancy. The fourth part probes into the strategies and methods of reducing redundancy in translation, using examples from the translation proper. The last part is the conclusion.
