A Project Report On The Translation Of Agreement On Implementation Of Article Ⅵof The General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade1994

This report chose Agreement on Implementation of Article VI of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade1994(Hereinafter referred to as Anti-dumping Agreement) as the study case, which is a typical WTO legal text and whose contents cover such fields as dumping, price undertakings, international goods and so on. Therefore, it also has the features of international agreements. By solving the problems encountered in the translation of this Agreement, the author aimed at making a further study on WTO legal texts and got a deeper understanding of such kind of texts.Anti-dumping Agreement is professional in contents and combines two fields:law and business, which result in its uniqueness in expressions and structure. Therefore, it is worth studying but meanwhile brings difficulties to its translators. In this Agreement, there is no shortage of formal words, French, Latin and archaic words, synonyms, as well as legal and business terms and formulas. The sentences in the Agreement are long and complicated and a paragraph composed of just one long sentence is common. Whether a translator can deal with these words and sentences well directly affects the quality of the translation.In order to solve the major issues and difficulties mentioned above, the author adopted the methods like nominalization of verbs, analyzing the long and complicated sentences, translating a long sentence into a few short ones and rearranging the word order. What’s more, the author summarized the common structures in the Agreement, and elaborated on how to use Norbert Wiener’s theory—Cybernetics to guide her practice of translation. The author selected proper examples to make analysis from the perspectives of words, sentences and stylistic features.
