The translation task is taken from The State of Food Insecurity in the World. Theauthor mainly selects the Foreword and the first two parts as the translation material.The State of Food Insecurity was published on the website of the Food and AgriculturalOrganization of the United Nations. Drawing on a series of indicators and data, thematerial examines the different experience of many countries in detail, finding differentmodels of progress and shortcomings and emphasizing the role of economic growth cando to food problems. The publication is targeted at a wide rage of audience, includingsome policy-makers, international organizations, academic institutions and the generalpublic who has an interest in the linkages between food security, and human andeconomic development. The Chinese translation of this material has certain significanceon the food insecurity and the relation between economic growth and nutrition in China.This report reviews the translation process. Pre-translation preparation mainlyincludes the collection of background information in the early stage and the analysis ofthe text and key points in the late stage. In the “case analysis” part, the author choosessome typical cases to make analyses. By comparing with an existing Chinese version,the author lists some proposed solutions for the translation problems with the help ofparallel texts and qualitative and quantitative analysis.Through the task description and case analysis, the report comes to someconclusions. Firstly, as an official document from the Food and AgriculturalOrganization, there are many long sentences with complex structures in The State ofFood Insecurity in the World. Thus to understand and clarify the sentence compositionand structure are important to translate this kind of material. The author uses approaches,such as semantic implication, reinventing sentence structure and following the originalsyntactic order to make the language concise and plain. Secondly, the author finds thatreference information, parallel texts and corpus are very helpful to the translation ofterms and organization names in the material. Thirdly, the material is an authoritativearticle with a lot of real time data analysis, the translation of this kind of article shouldbased on the truth and follow the language style of the original material, thus to producea better translation for the readers.This report intends to introduce the significance of the original material, conclude three main findings that should be paid attention, and attach importance on sometranslation methods and strategies that could be used in the translation of this kind ofarticle. Meanwhile,the Chinese translation of this material has a guiding significance onfood problem.
