Based on the trend of China’s increasingly aging population, this dissertation seeks to examine the issues and meaning of elderly music education through analysing various aspects, such as the concept and definition of lifelong learning, elderly learning within the scope of lifelong learning, the physical and mental development characteristics of the elderly,and the present situation of Chinese and Western elderly music education. At the same time, this paper,which is based in Shanghai, examines the basic circumstances and situations of elderly music learning in Shanghai. Through means such as literature research, interviews and surveys, data analysis, and empirical comparison, this paper analyses and examines the aging demographic,the development milestones and the present situation in elderly musical education,as well as the implementation circumstances of elderly musical learning in Shanghai, thereby attempting to demonstrate the significance and importance of elderly musical learning, as well as the suitable methods of elderly music learning.
