Approaches Of Transmitting Implicit Information In Lexical Translation Of The Report On The Work Of The Government

The Report on the Work of the Government, annually given by the PrimeMinister in China, which manifests social changes, has become a key informationresource for the world to be acquainted with China. Studies about Report on the Workof the Government before have mostly focused on translation strategies of words withChinese characteristics, neologisms or expressions of Chinglish. However, studiesconcerning the transmission of implicit information and the approaches to thetransmission on lexical translation in English versions of different times are neglected.This kind of research will be conducive to a probe into background information,combining lexical translation with background information. In a view of framesemantics, this thesis will discuss the way to the transmission of implicit information,through analyzing different dictions in the translations of words in The Report, in anattempt to provide some enlightenment in lexical translation of political texts.Frame semantics argues that a frame, which is associated with specific culturalscenes of human’s experiences, refers to schematic representation of human’sexperiences on the conceptual layer, activated by linguistic expressions, consisting ofelements and relations, equipped with the characteristic of levels. In result, thetranslator should motivate specific conceptual representations, that is, cognitivestructure, including semantic cognitive structure, through linguistic expressions in theprocess of translation. From the perspective of frame semantics, lexical translationstudies can help to explain roles of the translator’s cognitive structure, especiallysemantic cognitive structure in lexical translation.Applying frame semantics, through comparing and analyzing a series of words,quoted from the six Reports between1954and2013, the thesis probes into implicitinformation transmitted in the course of lexical translation and the ways in thetransmission. On the basis of what it concerns, implicit information in The Report isclassified into three types, covering implicit political information, implicit economic information and implicit livelihood information.The thesis is divided into four chapters, in which chapter one introducesapplication of the translator’s cognitive frame in lexical translation of political texts.Chapter two discusses the ways in the transmission of implicit political information inThe Report through changing perspectives, considering transforming viewpointsthrough frame selection and choices of frame elements as two main ways oftransmission, transmitting implicit information that the relationships between thecentral government and local governments and between the central government andethnic minorities and between the international community and China have beenmuch closer and that there are advances at the basic level in the society. Chapter threeexpounds the ways in the transmission of implicit economic information in TheReport, consisting of operations within frames by means of replacement of frameelements and adjustment in frame relations through positions of frame elements andre-lexicalization of unchanged frames, in result that it points out with the upgrading ofpeasants in social status and the evolution of employment system, the economy hasmade remarkable progress in China. Pointing out adjusting frame levels throughdescending to lower levels in a frame and ascending to upper levels in a frame,chapter four illustrates the ways in the transmission of implicit livelihood informationin The Report, conveying that people’s livelihood has been significantly improved insuch areas as higher education, dietary structure and health. Through discussingapproaches to the transmission of implicit information, this thesis arrives at aconslusion that the translator’s cognitive structure, especially semantic cognitivestructure, which has been attached importance in the lexical translation based onmeanings, plays a dispensable role in the transmission of implicit information. Inintegration of frame semantics with the lexical translation studies on The Report,application of the translator’s cognitive frame can contribute to digging much implicitinformation, in order that the interpretation of texts can be much deeper and morecomprehensive.
