This thesis is a practice report based on a Chinese-English translation work fromone chapter in a social science book. The source text is Chapter6in SocialStratification in Contemporary China: Measurement and Analysis, the name of thischapter is The Major Influence of the Variable of Policy on the Structure of SocialStratification. According to Peter Newmark’s classification of the text, the book hasfeatures of informative and expressive text. This translating work is guided by“Skopos theory” from a famous German translation theorist Hans Vermeer. In thispaper, the author analyzes the translating difficulties from lexical, sentential andcultural level. In terms of vocabulary, the author uses lexical conversion method; atsentential level, the author analyzes the translating methods of null subject sentenceand diffusive sentence; at last, the author takes the translation of Chinesecultural-loaded words as an example to analyze the difficulties at cultural level. Theauthor hopes it can provide reference for foreign readers who are interested inChinese sociology.
