When it comes to the development of Chinese painting and art education in the20th century, we have to mention one particular woman-Pan Yuliang. Pan Yuliang has unusual life experience and the opportunity of studying abroad in the early days of her time. This makes Pan Yuliang one of the most typical representatives of the few Chinese women artists of the early20th century through her individual efforts. During her stay in France for40years, Pan Yuliang always adheres to explore the essence of Chinese and western artistic expression and persists in the artistic ideas of "combination of Chinese and western elements" and "learning from the ancient people but not losing one’s own style just by following them". There are a number of paintings in the museum of Anhui Province. The writer, taking the works of Pan Yuliang in the museum as the firsthand materials, attempts to explore the subtle techniques associations among sketches, line drawing, color paintings and oil paintings by Pan Yuliang. First, the writer focuses of the study on the use of the lines and colour in Pan Yuliang’s paintings. The sketches by Pan Yuliang has not been studied thoroughly yet. The writer aims to analyze and explore the use of the lines and colour of sketches and other types of paintings by Pan Yuliang. Second, based on the legendary life experience of Pan Yuliang, we will have a better understanding of the reasons for the formation of her painting style with a more thorough analysis of her mental activities in various periods. Third, Pan Yuliang is strongly influenced by western culture, whether in life or the learning of painting, because of her40years life experience in France. Despite the influence of western education and culture, Pan Yuliang dedicates her whole life to the combination of Chinese and western painting culture. The writer selects a number of Chinese artists and foreign art schools at Pan Yuliang’s time. The writer attempts to analyze the formation of Pan Yuliang’s art style by exploring the ideas and styles of these artists and schools. We should analyze Pan Yuliang’s life story from an objective point of view and explore the reasons for the formation of her painting style in terms of her life experience.
