According to the requirements of cultivation of the Master for Translation and Interpreting (MTI), translation or interpreting practice has been regarded as a compulsory part for the study of MTI. The MTI students are required to complete specified amount of translation or interpreting practice. During the past three years of post-graduate study, the author has been in strict accordance with the guidelines of MTI education and has fulfilled the required fieldwork task. Base on the second model of the China National Committee For MTI Education, which is the translation practice report, this thesis gives a report of the subtitle translating and editing task done by the author during his study as an MTI student who interned in JingLiUS.com, an international media company based in New York.Besides the introduction and conclusion parts, this report is consisted of three chapters.The introduction presents the background information of this report, the questions to be discussed and the work done by the author.Chapter1gives a detailed description of the subtitling task with introduction to the client JingLiUS.com and the program presented by it, which is also called JingLiUS. Then comes to the operation of the program, the author’s role and working process. The program provide Chinese and American audience a better understanding with each other by sharing stories of oversea Chinese and suggestions of living in America. The author is responsible for the subtitling work of the program, which can be divided into two parts:subtitle translating and subtitle editing.Chapter2analyses the task with case study in terms of analysis of the unique features of subtitle language and source text, and typical problems the author may come across, which include dealing with cultural differences in translating and controlling of the length of subtitle sentences. Prompt settlement of every difficulty is described. Moreover, in this chapter, the author also discusses the embodiment of translator’s subjectivity in translating process.Chapter3is a reflection of the subtitling task. It brings up problems that did not be solved by the author in the process. The main problem is the quality of the author’s work cannot be guaranteed due to the limited translating experience of the author, lacking of translation quality supervision and the author’s unfamiliar skill of operating subtitling software. This chapter also presents the enlightenment and prospect for the future studies.The final part is the conclusion of this thesis. It discusses the deficiency of this thesis and development prospects of subtitling work in China. In recent years, with the rapid development of Chinese subtitling industry, the study of this aspect forms a certain number of research results. However, there are still few translation reports. The author analyses the problems encountered during his subtitling practice on the basis of relevant theory for the purpose of contributing to the translation practice.
