Machine translation(MT)has been extensively used in today's translation activities and is considered an effective tool to improve efficiency, especially in subtitle E-C translation. However,MT still has its limitations,as a result, many of the output still needs to be post-edited(PE)by translators.Based on the E-C subtitle translation of the videos in an English learning app, this thesis first summarizes the advantages of MT in subtitle translation, including increasing the translation speed of proper nouns and producing adoptable short sentence translations and acceptable long sentence translations to a certain degree. Then the thesis discusses MT limitations and PE strategies in E-C subtitle translation from three perspectives: lexicon, sentence and discourse. The main errors made by MT at the lexicon level are lexical errors, untranslated abbreviations and untranslated made-up words, and the PE strategies proposed are using alternative meanings, finding the full name of abbreviations and applying new methods of identification. At the sentence level, the main errors are redundancy and missing information in translations, and the corresponding PE strategies suggested are deleting redundant information and complete sentences according to context. And it is found that the main problems at the discourse include failing to convey the information in images and paralanguage. To solve the problems, the thesis suggests two corresponding PE strategies: describing the images and adding tone components.
