Punctuation, an organic part of written Chinese, is important in Teaching Chinese as aForeign Language(TCFL), which allows no negligence. However, it has not been developedas special teaching in most textbooks of TCFL and has usually been ignored by teachers ofTCFL in classroom teaching. Consequently, foreign students do not know enough standards ofusing punctuation, leading to errors in their written Chinese. This paper researches on the use of punctuation of Korean students at intermediate andadvanced levels in Chinese, chosen from the “HSK dynamic composition corpus” of BeijingLanguage University; it makes a full and systematic inquiry of the errors of punctuation in thecorpus by applying several approaches (such as corpus operation, error analysis, comparison, analysis, description and explanation) and using data, graphs, example sentences, etc.; itclassifies the errors into two types: written form error and using function error---the formertype includes physical error and format error and the latter one includes wrong substitution, adding and omission of punctuation. It shows that using function error occurs much more thanwritten form error; punctuation errors mainly lie in the use of comma and period. This paperalso concludes the characteristics of using punctuation of those students mentioned above.Besides, the paper discusses the reasons causing the errors from three perspectives----the student, the teacher and the textbook, which are key elements in the process of producingerrors. Lastly, on the basis of the former researches and research result of this paper, it alsoproposes serval relevant teaching suggestions, in the hope of providing some practicalteaching strategies in the punctuation teaching of Chinese teaching to Korean.
