As an organic part of the Chinese language, Chinese punctuation is notjust a symbol but full of meanings and idea to express statement. Through the survey itcan be found that in the present research in education and teaching Chinese as a foreignlanguage and in various aspects, the punctuation has not been paid enough attention, butthe reality is foreign students make many errors in the use of punctuation. Even formerteachers have recognized the problem, from the present textbook editing, teachers’teaching and students practical usage, we can find the problem has not been fullyresolved. This article is using error analysis to analyzed40students from the Confuciusinstitute scholarship applying for Chinese master of international education in more than60writing materials of punctuation marks usage errors in the Sichuan normal university, meanwhile sorted and classified according to the types of punctuation marks on thecommon errors. and did a survey for Chinese language teachers and overseas students.Based on the results of the survey and analysis as research object, writer summarizedthe causes of common punctuation errors made by Sichuan normal university overseasstudents as follows: Large differences in different native language and nationaldifference; Single punctuation functioning usage; Types of punctuation to use in smallscale, relatively centralized; Students don’t have strong consciousness to Correctly Useof punctuation, such as nonstandard usage ect. The main reason of why errors causedcan be divided into two parts: the external cause and internal cause, on the one hand, overseas students lack of attention to properly use of Chinese punctuation, teachers lackof adequate attention in the teaching process, teachers’ teaching and students’ learninglack of professional guidance from teaching materials; students are influenced by notstandardized network languages; On the other hand, mother tongue can producenegative transfer of students when using punctuation marks, and the target language will produce negative transfer. In view of this, the author proposes:During teaching Chineseas a foreign language, teachers should pay attention to students psychologicalcharacteristics, improve the students view on the importance of punctuation; teachersshould set themselves as examples, use standard languages; In the process of teaching, teachers should help overseas students to conquer the negative transfer of mothertongue, and help students according to their aptitude; Punctuation content should bereflected in the teaching materials; During the teaching implementation stage, we advisethe principle of advanced type and so on. The author also put forward that in theelectronic information age, we should regain to practice writing by pen;In the teaching process teachers could use the way of classification to teach, toavoid the wrong usage in writing or functioning use, that’s what we are assumed.
