On Translation Methods Of Culture Images In Jangar From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

China is an ancient civilization with a long history, Chinese people have invented voluminous excellent classics with their extraordinary wisdom, so do the ethnic minorities. Jangar is known to every Mongolian household. It has been included in the World Intangible Cultural Heritage with its important historical significance and literary value. Nowadays, many outstanding literary works of ethnic minorities have been translated into English. With the cultural turn in translation studies, people have paid more attention to culture during their translation. To study and understand culture images of literary works is one of the important methods of studying ethnic minority culture, because image is one of the souls in literature. In Jangar, a lot of words with Mongolian cultural feature, folk legends and traditional customs are employed. Thus, translation on culture images in Jangar is a key feature in the process of English translation.Functional equivalence theory was put forward by Eugene A. Nida. Compared with other translation theories, this theory brings culture and readers’response into translation studies. Functional equivalence theory emphasizes that translators should reproduce the original information with the most natural equivalent.Based on the functional equivalence theory in terms of meaning, style and culture, this thesis takes some typical culture images translation as examples and discusses the translation methods including literal translation, literal translation plus annotation, addition, omission, transliteration plus annotation, substitution and paraphrase. Then the author will analyze whether the translation achieves semantic equivalence, sentence equivalence, passage equivalence and style equivalence accurately and adequately. It is concluded that the translation methods in cultural images from the perspective of functional equivalence theory are worthy of further studies and explorations. It is also found that there is not only one translation method for different types of culture images in the epic. Therefore, translators should adopt flexible methods, so that readers of the translation texts can basically get the same information of readers of the source text. It is hoped that this study will be beneficial to publicize and promote the literary works of ethnic minority, so as to improve the propagation and influence of ethnic minority cultures in the world.
