This report is concerned with the translation of Chapter One to Chapter Four of Part III, an important part of History of China s Communications written by Bai Shouyi and published by United Press in2007which is valued as the first academic monograph of making a comprehensive introduction to the history of China’s communications. The report consists of five parts. The first part gives an introduction to the text source and the context. The second part analyzes the language feature of the text and the guiding principles. The third part focuses on the preparation work before translating. The forth part which is the most import part of the report explores the main approaches used in the translation practice with specific examples. The last part is the conclusion summarizing the experiences and deficiencies during the translation.Inspired by the intralingual translation and interlingual translation proposed by Jakobson, the author firstly makes an intralingual translation from the ancient Chinese to modern Chinese, and then translates modern Chinese into English so as to convey the context to foreign readers faithfully.
