English, as an international language, plays an important role in international communication. English for Science and Technology(EST) has unified all the science and technology in the world between different languages. It combines English and technology and fuses them into a new and important subject. EST is a unique and specific language, which is different from other language styles. It requires the translator to be familiar with its language features, and then combines its translation principles and strategies with the practical text flexibly. This paper is a translation project report. The author is entrusted by a professor, who is from Information Science & Engineering College in Yanshan University, to translate the editorial preface, preface and the first two chapters of Sequence Design for Communications Applications. This report is based on the translation practice of this book, which is one of the most important text books in electronic communication, without any Chinese translation version. This report discusses language features, translation principles, and translation strategies. Under the guidance of Skopos theory, this report analyses some problems, appeared in the translation process: for the lexical translation, with the purpose of delivering information, the author finds that terms, abbreviations, and nominalizations are extensively used in EST, so the TT must be direct, brief, accurate and precise. From the syntactic perspective, impersonal sentences, passive sentences, long and complicated sentences are frequently adopted. So linear translating, inverse translating, and division translating are adopted in the long sentences translation, with the translation principle of accuracy, coherence, and formal; Initiative translating, subjectless translating, and passive translating are used in passive sentences translation.By translating this project and writing this report, the author gets clear that to ensure a high quality EST translation, the translator needs not only to have a large vocabulary and a strong bilingual ability, but also abundant knowledge and culture in this field. It is hoped that the translation can be a good reference for the client and those who major inElectronic communications, and that this report may give some enlightenment for other translators who translate such kinds of EST profiles.
