This is a report on translation of the first three chapters and excerpts fromchapter4of the book Testing for Language Teachers written by Arthur Hughes.At first sight, this report briefed the background, purpose and meaning of thetranslation project, and the structure of the report. On top of these, the report made abrief introduction of the background of the source text. On the basis of what mentionedabove, the paper illustrated the preparation work the author made before the start of thetranslation project, and made an overall statement about the translating problems theauthor encountered and major translation methods employed during the translationprocess.Generally speaking, in the course of this translation project, the author adhered tothe principle of “communicative translation first with due consideration given tosemantic translation”, and employed proper translation methods(mainly include literaltranslation and free translation, combination and segmentation, and transfer of voice)under the guidance of the translation principle mentioned above, in an attempt to conveythe real ideas of the source text.When illustrating the translation methods used in thetranslating process, the author made a detailed analysis using a number of examplesfrom the translation practice. In the end, the author concluded the experience obtainedand lessons learned from the translation project as well as problems remained to besolved.
