This is a translation project report for Presidential Leadership in an Age ofTransition: Dynamic Responses for a Turbulent Time. The original version wasco-composed by Peter D.Eckel from ACE(American council on education) andMatthew Hartley from UP(University of Pennsylvania). It is an education report forAmerican presidential leadership under globalization background. Based on a briefintroduction of the translation project background, the significance of the project aswell as those characteristics of the original text, it summarizes the difficulties thetranslator confronts in translation and discuss the methods of handling them. Thetranslator holds the principle of translation should be "meaning first with prioritygiven to literal translation", and in translation he/she should employ all possiblemethods flexibly, including literal translation, free translation, amplification andomission so that the meaning or the message in the original text can be conveyedfaithfully. When dealing with long and complexed sentences, the translator should befamiliar with the differences between English and Chinese, and abide by languagenorms of the target language to practice an idiomatic Chinese version. Meanwhile, thetranslator is obliged to take account of the feature of the original, be aware of theeducation system the original text means, and translate the jargons of education intoChinese with as much accuracy as possible.
