This is a translation project report on the chapter5of Introducing SecondLanguage Acquisition written by Saville Troike.M, a professor who studies the secondlanguage acquisition. This chapter discusses the social factors that influence secondlanguage acquisition from two levels: the microsocial context and the macrosocialcontext, and solves the problems of what to learn and how to learn in second languageacquisition step by step. The original text is classified as academic style featuring withnumerous generic terms and long and complex sentences, which creates a lot oftranslation difficulties for the translators. In order to solve the above problems, thisrepot, supported by Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, discusses adoption ofdiction, conversion, addition, omission and division in academic text translation. Thisreport consists of four parts: Part One is an introduction of this translation project,including the background, targets, significances and structure of this report, Part Twogives a brief analysis of original text and the author; Part Three discusses FunctionalEquivalence Theory and translation skills and Part Four concludes with lessons, gainsand remaining problems of this project.
