Peter Newmark introduced the conception of Communicative Translation andSemantic Translation in his book Approach to Translation and proposed typology of thetext in another book A Textbook of Translation and he pointed out that each type of texthad a corresponding translation method. When translating the third chapter of Introducing Second Language Acquisition, the writer finds that it is not a pure text with one single text type, and instead, it is acompound text with both informative and expressive texts. In the translation, the writerfinds that the original text embodies expressive features in three aspects, i.e. conceptionexpression, fact statement and scientific data. When dealing with different types of text,we need to make an alternation in our translation methods. And there are three types oftext that can not use the traditional semantic translation to deal with, which are the textthat may lead to difficulties in understanding or misunderstanding after translation, thetext that differs in culture and the text that has no equivalent expression in targetlanguage’s grammar. In such circumstances, translator should not concentrated on onesingle translation strategy and should combine several translation stratedgies andmethods comprehensively in order to produce a fluent and neat translation. This thesis consists of four parts: Part One is an introduction to this program, including the original text and the program itself. Part Two introduces Newmark’s Text Typology and writer’s classification of the original text according to Newmark’s theory.Part Three is an introduction to the application of semantic translation andcommunicative translation in practice. And Part Four is a conclusion. The latter part ofthis thesis is an appendix of the original text and the translation text.
