This is a translation project report on Chapter Two of Introducing SecondLanguage Acquisition written by Saville Troike.M. The author is a professor atUniversity of Arizona and has done a lot of research in the aspects of social linguisticsand applied linguistics. This is a book about second language acquisition. It introducessome basic concepts of SLA and answers the questions about how to learn a secondlanguage, what should be learned from the second language and why some learners arebetter than the others. It also encourages learners to study the second language fromthe discussion of linguistic, psychological and social perspectives. From the analysis ofthe original text, it can be seen that the text is intended to transmit the information onsecond language to readers. The translation text is required to reproduce the meaningof the original text comprehensively and accurately, which contributes to making theeffect of the translation text on the target readers close to the effect of the original texton source language readers. This requirement is just similar to the Newmark’s semantictranslation theory and communicative translation theory. However, translation is notjust a conversion activity of language. It deepens into the culture which language arerooted in. The essence of translation is the communication and integration of culture.The semantic translation theory deficiencies in transmitting the cultural connotationand the communicative translation theory sometimes caters to the target languageculture which will distort the original sense too much. Through the analysis about thecombination of semantic translation theory and communicative translation theory, thistranslation project report tends to find translation methods according to the difficultiesin translation, which helps the practice of translation.This translation project report is composed of four parts: the first part is thedescription of translation project which includes the background, objectives, significance and the structure of the report. In the second part, the introduction of thestudy background, the guiding theory in the process of translation, the main content ofthe original context and the analysis of the original linguistic features are included. Thethird part focuses on the difficulties and the methods of the translation, including thepreparation work before translation, the difficulties and the adopted methods in theprocess of the project, such as amplification and omission in translation, linear andinverse translation skills and long sentence dismantling. The last part overviews theexperience and lessons gained by the translator and the problems that still should besolved in the future.
