A Comparative Study About Koguryo And Chinese Northern Dynasties Buddhism Statues

Buddhism was introduced to China between two Han Dynasties, and it had a considerable developing in the after several hundred years. Because of Koguryo’s location was in the northernmost of the Korean Peninsula, and the communication with China was relatively close, so Buddhism was introduced to the Koguryo firstly in the fourth century AD. The introduction of Buddhism added new vitality to the religion and culture of Koguryo. With the introduction of Buddhism, the artistic of Buddhism statues which had flourished in China had also started to develop in Koguryo, and now there were a few exquisite Buddhist statues handed down. This paper attempts to investigate the process of the introduction of Buddhism to Koguryo and the development of Koguryo Buddhism, focused around styling features of Koguryo Buddha statues and the relationship between Koguryo and Chinese Northern Dynasties Buddhist statues. Then solved the differences and similarities between Koguryo and Chinese Northern Dynasties Buddhist statues and clarified the specific impact of the Northern Buddhist statues style to Koguryo Buddhist statues, while generalized the features of Koguryo Buddhist statues.This paper includes the following five chapters:The first chapter is an introduction, to clarify the purpose and significance of this paper, reviewed of domestic and foreign research situation on Koguryo Buddhist statues and the relationship with the Northern Dynasties Buddhist statues, then elaborated the research methods and the innovations of this paper.The second chapter, analyzed the initially time and routes when Buddhism was introduced to Koguryo. Then introduced the development situation of Buddhism in Koguryo according to historical data.The third chapter analyzed the Buddhist statues style of existing Koguryo Buddhist statues and Chinese Northern Dynasties Buddhist statues. By comparing the type, posture, clothing, fingerprints, light back and other aspects of the statues, explored the characteristics of Koguryo Buddhist statues and the relationship with Northern Dynasties Buddhist statues. The fourth chapter integrated the foregoing analysis and comparison of Koguryo and Northern Dynasties Buddhist statues, clarified the specific impact of the Northern Dynasties style to Koguryo Buddha statues. At the same time, revealed the characteristics of Koguryo Buddhist statues.The fifth chapter generalized the paper and get the conclusion.
