The teaching of a proper utilization of prepositions such as “dui”,“xiang”,“gei” is an important part of the teaching of functional words. It is also the mostdifficult and frequently confused aspect of using Chinese. This study summarizesthe findings of a survey conducted among60freshmen of National University ofMongolia. The study also identifies the most popular reasons for the confusionand discusses the possible solutions to be adopted in order to make usage ofabove mentioned prepositions as natural as possible. As the study pinpoints,confusion usually arises from an inevitable impulsion of students to drawparallels with their own native language. Secondly, the mistakes are dictated bylimited knowledge of a second language as a culture. Thirdly, the complex natureof Chinese as is presents the genuine challenge. Lastly, the lack of textbooks andmethods particularly stressing the proper usage of the prepositions aggravate thesituation. Therefore, here I propose the following possible solutions to tackle theproblem:1. Customization of the layout of the textbooks to effectively reflectspecifics of a native language of a student would be beneficial to help tounderstand the basics of using prepositions mentioned above. In the other wordsa clear explanation of differences and specifics between two languages wouldprevent student’s usage of the prepositions as a direct translation of phrases andsentences from a native language.2. Contrast, situational and generalization methods illustrating similaritiesand differences between usages of a given preposition over another would helpto instill an intuitive usage of the prepositions.3. Routines designed to refresh main points of every class and get ready forthe coming classes would reinforce the knowledge obtained in classroom. 4.In terms of student learning must be in before class, lesson, after-schoollectures in close contact, and finally apply their knowledge to achieve thepurpose.
