The text that the translator chooses in this translation practice is An Outline Historyof England, a book written by famous British scholar, A. G. Eyre. The author writes thetext in a style that is easy to understand and clear to explain the major events andfamous people in the history of the United Kingdom, which represents the originalBritish history again. The translator chooses six chapters as the translation project (theyare chapter one, chapter two, chapter three, chapter ten and chapter eleven), a total ofmore than twelve thousand words.Taking the readers’ understanding and acceptability on Euro-American culture intoconsideration, the translator bases on the soil of Chinese culture and then flexiblyadopts Chinese idioms, proverbs and allusions, in order to show the relative equivalencebetween Chinese history and Euro-American history. Starting from the Westerntranslation equivalence theory, the author intends to make a preliminary study of thetranslation of the historical documents, aiming to find out the underlying translationprinciples and some effective translation strategies and techniques in this area. After translating the chosen chapters, the translator goes on to write a translationreport with four parts. The first part is task description: it mainly introduces thebackground, motivation of choosing this text, and makes an analysis of the text; Thesecond part is translation process: it includes preparation before translating, the analysisof key points and difficult points; The third part is case analysis: in this part the writeranalyzes and summarizes the basic problems encountered in translation throughexamples, and then gives corresponding solutions to the problems combined withtranslation theory and techniques; The fourth part is the conclusion: it summarizes whatthe translator has achieved during this translation practice and also points out the translator’s shortcomings as well as some aspects for future development..Through this translation practice, the translator has a new understanding oftranslation, besides that, he is able to apply several translation methods more flexibly inthe translation practice. In addition, the translator finds that he is still lack ofsophisticated language skills. Knowing all of these, the translator realizes that he has tolay a more solid foundation for future translation work.
