A Report On The C-E Translation Of World Bank-Financed Project Based On Parallel Texts—from The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

With the further development of globalization and increasingly frequent exchanges between China and foreign countries,the translation of pragmatic texts such as Requests for Proposals,technical documents,and product manuals grows with the times.Due to the specification and division of various industries and labor force,it is difficult for translators to master professional knowledge of all trades.In order to satisfy the requirement and quality of translation tasks,translators have to rack their brains to improve efficiency.The report is based on the writer’s own translation practice,the translation work for World Bank-Financed Project.During the process of translation,she encountered two challenges: first,the source text involves a great deal of professional knowledge and contains plenty of technical terms and proper nouns in many fields,like engineering and environment.Second,the project text differs from common translation practice in school.The target readers of the former are officials,scholars,specialists,etc.,who boast a degree of professional background.Hence the writer must consider how to make her translation more idiomatic and closer to target language.From the perspective of Skopos theory,the writer finds that referring to parallel texts serves as an effective means to solve the above two problems.Parallel texts of source language or those of target language can both be helpful for the writer to make up her weaknesses in professional knowledge and to present the translated text in a natural writing style.However,the writer also finds some deficiencies,such as the authoritativeness and timeliness of parallel texts.In regard to that,she proposes that translators should improve their search quotient and work with the help of Computer Aided Translation tools.The writer hopes to underline the significance of parallel texts applied in translation through her practice-based research,so as to provide a better guidance on the practical translation work to translators including the writer herself.Furthermore,she also wishes that this report can give some reference for the study of pragmatic texts translation with professionalism.
