As the international tooling cooperation increases, the social demand for tooling translator or interpreter rises rapidly. However, the number of tooling translators and interpreters is quite small.In addition, there are few academic studies in tooling translation, theories guiding tooling translation being rather few. When the author took over the task, she was blocked for short of theoretical guidance, tooling knowledge and experience etc., which makes her realize that tooling translation is complicated and difficult. In order to improve the translating efficiency and complete the academic thesis, the author determined to do a research in this task.This thesis mainly makes case studies in the translation task of Tooling Supplier Manual. She classifies the difficulties and explores the solutions. What’s more, it discusses the functional equivalence theoretical guidance to the tooling translation task. According to the commissioner’s translating requirements, the author tries to express the information in the source text accurately and briefly. Analyzing the textual features of the source text, the author finds that the task can be guided and needs to be guided by Nida’s functional equivalence theory. Thus, the author depends that theory, the professional knowledge from the tooling workers and the tooling guidebooks etc. in the factory. The thesis reaches a conclusion after case studies that tooling translation can be critically guided by functional equivalence theory and completed by combining professional tooling knowledge, excellent bilingual ability, translation skills and professional quality of the translator.The thesis first describes the task, including the task background, the commissioner——Xinyongxu (Shenzhen) Mold&Die Co., Ltd. Then it talks about the preparatory jobs for the task, including reading and analyzing the source text, translation planning and quality control planning, translation assisted tools and basic tooling knowledge etc. Then, the author lists the difficulties on three levels, namely the lexical level, the sentence level and the textual level. Later, the thesis explores the solutions under the guidance of the theory and talks about the author’s reflection to the task. Finally comes a conclusion to the thesis.Theoretically speaking, the thesis provides a new theoretical perspective for tooling translation study. Social economically speaking, it is helpful to improve the working efficiency of the tooling translators and the development of tooling industry, such as boosting the economic and technique communication in the tooling field.
