A Project Report On E-C Translation Of Instruction Manual Of Vortex Flowmeter

With the rapid development of global economy, global communication has been deepened. More and more scholars and translators start to study the pragmatic translation. However, the quality of the translation varies from each other owing to the lack of subject knowledge and language competence. The instruction manuals of chemical instruments have fewer readers. Only some professionals would come across them. The texts’expertise appears daunting. This report tries to discuss the translation skills for this kind of texts. I hope my report can arouse other scholars’ and translators’interest in instruction manuals of chemical instruments and inspire them.This report selects the instruction manual of Vortex Flowmeter as object of study. In this report, the author analyzes the lexical and syntactic features of instruction manuals, especially instruction manuals of chemical instruments. The author realizes that nouns, technical terms and acronym are frequently used in the texts of chemical instruments, which shows the expertise of this kind of texts. Meanwhile, the major issues and difficulties in translation are listed and analyzed on the basis of functional equivalence. Finally, the author summarizes the personal experience and offers the available recommendation:to get the thorough translation preparation by reading parallel texts to get the enough background knowledge, and to make use of English-to-English dictionaries, English-to-Chinese dictionaries and other search engine.
