This thesis will make relevant study on interpreting techniques of TV SI from the perspective of Relevance Theory. China increasingly strengthens its exchanges and cooperation with other countries with the deepening of globalization. Certainly, television broadcasting is without exception. Foreigners and foreign languages frequently appear in TV programs, and along with TV programs’internationalization, one problem-language barrier-is also becoming more and more obvious. In order to convey information in real time and meanwhile not to affect quality of TV programs and understanding of TV audience, language barrier must be efficiently addressed. Therefore, the application of simultaneous interpreting in TV programs, i.e. television simultaneous interpreting (hereinafter referred to as TV SI), was born and has become the best solution to this problem. The theory used in this thesis is known as Relevance Theory. Relevance Theory is the theoretical foundation of cognitive pragmatics. Its purpose is to recognize the internal mechanism of the human psyche, thus explaining the way of human communication. It attracts wide attention of scholars and has been applied into various fields. Interpreting is one way of human communication and therefore has commonality with Relevance Theory. It is a new attempt to apply Relevance Theory in the analysis of TV SI which is a newly-born means of cross-language and cross-cultural communication.Under the guidance of Relevance Theory, this thesis is aiming to analyze interpreting techniques used by interpreters in TV SI in combination with its characteristics. Material used for analysis in the thesis are video clips form live television programs in recent years, the scripts of which are dictated and recorded by the author herself. Because of TV SI’s unique background and special requirements, interpreters face great challenge; therefore, they must use relevant interpreting techniques to deal with difficulties. These interpreting techniques should not only help the interpreter to realize successful conveying of information but also reduce information processing efforts of television audience. Techniques under the guidance of Relevance Theory can satisfy both requirements. This thesis will conduct an analysis of interpreting techniques in TV SI through main concepts of Relevance Theory, such as ostension and inference, context, and optimal relevance, in order to explore how these techniques will make the interpreter in TV SI get twice the result with half the effort and fully meet the needs of the television audience. The relevant analysis in this thesis may push forward future development of TV SI.
