Idioms, which are used very frequently and enjoy a long history with diverseorigins and abundance in number, are an important part of the Chinesemorphological system. They are fixed in structure and holistic in meanings, andcontain rich cultural traditions and meanings. Whether idioms are correctly andfluently used by foreign students is a yardstick in their competency evaluation.However, with the features of the idioms themselves and the negligence of theteaching of idioms in the teaching of Chinese as a second foreign language,students’ mastery for idioms is not so satisfactory. Therefore, the paper tries tobegin with the errors made by the Indonesian students in their intermediate oradvanced levels on their idiom learning or acquisition, then summarize their errortypes, and further then analyze their error causes so as to facilitate feasiblesuggestions on the teaching of Chinese idioms in Indonesia.This paper is divided into6chapters, in which Chapter One mainly deals withthe significance of the choice of the topic, research methods and targets with thestress on the importance of the teaching of idioms in Indonesia and with asummary of the published research results in this respect.Chapter Two probes into the84items of the targets collected from theIndonesian students in the intermediate or advanced levels with statistic analysison the results of the questionnaire or their after-class homework. After that, anover-all summary is made for their mastery of the idioms in their levels. Chapter Three analyzes their errors with the summary made in Chapter Two.With relevant literature reviews and references, their errors could be categorizedinto four types, which are functional errors in grammar, comprehension error insemantics, formal error in writing and error in pragmatics.Chapter Four tries to summarize the causes of their errors with the data andresults from Chapter Three.Chapter Five deals with the issues and problems in the existing teaching ofChinese Idioms in Indonesia and facilitates with feasible measures in theirteaching.And finally Chapter Six is a conclusion chapter of the paper.
