This is a translation report based on the translation practice of an English thesis Strategy, Human Resource Management and Performance:Sharpening Line of Sight. With the intensifying market competition, the importance of human resources management has become increasingly prominent. For the rapid development of socialist marketing economy, the effects of human resources management in our country’s enterprise management have also become increasingly important. Whether an enterprise can develop soundly or not depends on the quality of the staff and the efficiency of human resources management in enterprises management. This thesis from Elsevier Science Direct is about10,000words and was referenced for many times in a relatively short period of time. There are no Chinese versions for it. Translating this thesis aims to make some Chinese management science scholars whose mother tongue is not English refer to these papers more easily. The following are several translation difficulties of the text:Firstly, Terminology is a significant part in academic papers, so terminology translation is a difficulty in science translation and deserves great concern. The English terms are featured by conciseness, accuracy and stable semantics, so their Chinese translation should also possess these features. As the translators do not have relevant specialized background and knowledge, some specialized words must be translated with the help of dictionary and network in order to confirm their most accurate translation. Secondly, academic works are featured by rigorous and elaborate diction which is the emphasis and difficulty of translation. As a whole, this translation project is guided by the three main principles related to German Functionalist Translation Theory, that is, the skopos principle, the coherence principle and the fidelity principle. During the whole process of translation, some translation methods were used, such as amplification, omission and conversion. As to how to grasp the stylistics feature, some translation strategies such as literal translation and free translation were used. Moreover, academic works are featured by long and complex sentences, so the translation of long and complex sentences is also a difficulty. This translation report will analyze some specific cases and explore how to translate English long sentences through these methods including sequential method, reversed order method and synthetic method. The translation report consists of five chapters:(1)Introduction to the translation project, including the project background, objectives, significance and the report structure;(2)An introduction to the research status of this kind of text, including text analysis of academic papers and the translation theory adopted during this translation project;(3)The task description, including pre-translation preparation (preparation of background information and professional knowledge, and translator’s subjectivity), and the translation difficulties in translation process;(4)Case study, including the lexical skills adopted during translation, the processing of English long and complex sentences and coherence and cohesion;(5)Conclusions, including the experiences and lessons drawn from this translation practice. This report aims to explore the translation skills of management academic papers, and provide references for the future translation practice of the management science.
