The previous studies on the translation of English long sentences are mainly concerned with techniques of transferring the English long sentence according to the Chinese norms of sentence-building. The underlying assumption seems to be that what the translator should do in translating English long sentences is merely to handle the content alone. However, translation is not simply a linguistic transfer of content, but a decision-making process constrained by other factors. In this paper, three constraining factors have been examined: style, textual coherence and translator's manipulation. Firstly, the form of the long sentence in a specific context may be poetically or thematically motivated and of great artistic significance. In this sense, the translator is not justified in departing from the stylistic features of the long sentence. Secondly, the ordering pattern of the long sentence plays an important role in achieving textual coherence and is worth preserving as much as possible in translation. Thirdly, as the act of translation takes place in concrete social-cultural contexts, the translator's manipulation in face of the norms of the target culture manifests itself in the strategies that he adopt to render the long sentence. Based on the analysis of the three constraining factors, the paper examines the losses entailed in the domesticating strategy and the merits inherent in the foreignizing strategy.
