News is an important way to disseminate information. Its main function is to convey information and meet the readers’ need of learning about current affairs at home and abroad. Similarly, news translation should also follow the characteristics of news and achieve the purpose of news. Nida’s functional equivalence theory emphasizes correct transference of information and readers’ response, and can effectively guide news translation. Therefore, it is feasible to apply this theory to the guidance of news translation. Based on this theory and using the translation of The Economist as a case study, this thesis explores the effective strategies of news translation. The thesis first introduces The Economist. Then it discusses Nida’s functional equivalence theory and the feasibility of the theory to the guidance of news translation. Finally it analyzes and explores the strategies used in the translation of news in The Economist, and helps to achieve functional equivalence between the translated text and the original one at the levels of word and syntax. |
