Translation Report On English Business News From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

As the most widely used language in the world,English has naturally become an important tool for international information exchange.English news,especially English Business news which serves as the window to know the international market has a lot of readers worldwide.The translation of English Business News is particularly important since the different English level of readers in the target language country.Following the characteristics of news itself,English Business News translation should be faithful to the source text first.In meanwhile,the feelings and reactions from readers must be taken into consideration also,the translation should fully represent linguistic and cultural features of the target language country.According to Nida,translation should achieve this goal that “The reaction of the target readers to the target text should be equivalent to that of the source text readers to the source text”.The functional equivalence theory put forward by Nida emphasizes correct delivery of information and readers' response.So the author thinks that this theory could offer effective guidance for this translation practice.Based on this theory,the author further concludes two basic translation principles: reader-oriented and information accuracy.Given the text features of The Economist business news and problems encountered during the translation,the author adopts the following translation methods: using extended meaning,adding annotation and using four-character phrases on the lexical level;changing sentence voice,restructuring and dividing on the syntactic level.In addition,the author summarizes the gains and lessons from this translation practice.Through this report,the author gains the conclusion that Nida's functional equivalence theory can tremendously facilitate the translation of English Business News as a theoretical and practical guide.
