Globalization has developed rapidly, with close ties and frequent exchanges between countries.Changes in one country's political or economic aspects will have a significant impact on itself and have an unpredictable effect on the entire world. From the date of June 23,2016,Brexit referendum,Brexit has become a world-renowned event. As a well-known British periodical,The Economist plays a significant role in spreading Britain's news to the world,China included. The Brexit process, which lasted for more than three years, has always been caught attention by all countries, and The Economist has continuously reported on this event.Though English has turned into the world lingua franca,non-native English speakers have different levels of English proficiency;the translator thus needs to translate Brexit news series reported in The Economist for them. This project chooses the Brexit news series reported in The Economist as the translation object to ensure that the target language readers understand the Brexit event and its impact as much as possible.Based on Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory, the translator explores how to accomplish functional equivalence at the lexical, syntactic, and discourse levels, and how to achieve a balance between "accurate" and "natural" principles in translation to create "the closest and most natural equivalence to the source text".With guidance from Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory, combined with the source text features and the problems encountered in translation practice, the translator adopts different translation strategies. At the lexical level, annotation, amplification, literal translation, free translation, and conversion are adopted. At the syntactical level, transforming passive into active, division, amplification, free translation, and adjusting word order are adopted. At the discourse level, concretion, literal translation, free translation, and amplification are adopted to achieve cohesion and coherence of the context. In short, because Brexit is a significant event of historical significance in international politics, the translator believes that the translation of Brexit news series not only helps target readers to understand this significant international event. Moreover, with the help of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory, the translator hopes that this report will have specific referential significance for improving the translation quality of similar news texts.
