An E-C Translation Report On An Introduction To Welding Inspection

In recent years, with the development of science and technology, the higher frequency of communication on science and technology around the world and the increasing amount of science and technology texts in the translation market, the theory and practice of translation study about science and technology text is becoming more and more important. This report analyzes the phraseology characteristic and the translation strategy and method in science and technology texts, which could be applicable reference and theoretical guide for the translation of science and technology texts.The text of this translation project is provided by a Germany technical consultant. The original text, which is mainly about how to improve welding inspection skill, is taken from ESAB (a famous company which is specialized in offering welding and cutting tools) website whose writer is Tony Anderson.Based on communicative translation theory of Peter Newmark, this report analyses the original texts from two aspects which are vocabulary and sentence structure. There are a large amount of technical terminologies, long sentences and passive sentences in the original texts. Through analysis of the original text, this report summaries a principle or strategy for translating science and technology texts, which is to step over the differences between English and Chinese in terms of information presentation and logic relevancy. To realize the communicative purpose of the texts and to ensure the accuracy and acceptability of the translation, three principles, which are fidelity, profession and readability should be complied with and various translation methods such as linear interpretation, division, restructuring, conversion between actives and passives, integration translation are used under the precondition that the communicative function of texts is guaranteed and expectations of readers are considered.
