The paper is a report of the translation project of "overhearing the city, and follow ears to travel." The source text is "overhearing the city, and follow ears to travel" which is publicized by International Culture Publishing Company. The contents primarily show some major cities in China and introduce some dialogues of local residents. From these, we can know the city from the residences’conversation. It selects the most interesting and representative conversations performed through dialects. Everyday we live in the hustle and bustle of city and hear plenty of words that different people say, while we paid little attention to them. In fact, it is these words that can reflect the most authentic aspect of society. There is an inner connection between south and north dialects. Just as other translation involving culture, translation of this article is another channel for cultural inter-exchange, which makes the target readers linger on specific culture of various cities, appreciate the profoundness of Chinese history culture and savor different style and features of China. There are five parts in the translation project. The first part is a brief introduction which introduces the background, objective, significance of the project. The third part devotes to the task description which includes comprehension, expression and proofreading stage as well as the contents and syntactic features of the original text. The second part is a brief literature review and the theoretical foundation of this paper. The writer mainly uses Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory as the theoretical foundation and closely follows the aim to spread Chinese literary culture in the translating process. The fourth part puts forward the difficulties encountered in translation practice and discussed some strategies utilized in the translation process, such as:supplement, abridgment or omission, transliteration, etc. The fifth part not only summarizes the lessons and experiences learned in this practice, but also lists the problems which need solving.
