From the maiden work The Book and the Sword in1955to the last novelThe Deer and the Cauldron in1972, with the brilliant imagination and solidliterary attainment, Jin Yong created15kung fu novels in a short spanof17years, shaped many classic kung fu figures with universal praise, and became the leader of new kung fu novel world. His work sweptChinese-speaking world and derived Jin-study. However, Jin Yong conductedhard revision rigorously and modestly twice, whose large emendation andlong time consumption is rarely seen in the history of popular literature. The first revision started in1970, and Jin Yong Collection was releasedten years later. The second large revision was in2002and Jin YongCollection (New edition) was published by Guangzhou Express in2005.Through two revisions, Jin Yong broke the traditional concept and theinherent orientation of martial arts, made indelible contribution to theclassicization of popular literature. The researches before mostconcentrate on the internal text study, which combining one or severalworks, analyze the embodiment and evolution of Jin Yong’s idea inconnotation, figure, aesthetic tendency, historical awareness and otheraspects. Few scholars present the development of editions, contentemendation, the deep revision reason and cultural consciousness of hiswork in detail, and it will help us study the martial art aesthetics ofJin Yong with the diachronic eyes. Based on the research status above, the author chooses “the edition of Jin Yong’s novels” as the object, conducts specific analysis to the Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils which has thelargest emendation among all Jin Yong’s works according to the editiondevelopment at different periods, and attempts to explore the deep reasonand the literary significance of revision combining the macro and microview. Therefore, the attempt possesses a certain value. The paper contains three chapters. Chapter one presents and concludesthe development of Jin Yong’ novel edition, during which the authorcompares the early edition in newspaper, the Joint Press edition and thenew edition in terms of diachrony, and analyzes different editions of HongKong, Taiwan, China Mandarin and foreign countries. Chapter two collatesthe three editions of the Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils in detail. In theevolution from the first edition to the Joint Press edition, Jin Yong made large emendation on the figure, sect and plot, attempted to make up theimproper connection and contradiction in serialization, and highlightedhis creation purpose. From the Joint Press edition to the new edition,Duan Yu’s stupid and ignorant image is changed, and the communicationwith different girls also reflects the diversity and complexity of humannature. It mirrors Jin Yong’s pursuit for psychological depth and tragedyaesthetics, and the attempt of approaching common customs. Meanwhile, JinYong remedied the story flaws and narrative chaos of the Joint Pressedition, and changed the exegesis and postscript a little, which made thecontent more substantial, the logic more deliberate and the figure moreenriched. Based on the former two chapters, chapter three explores thereason and value of the revision. On the popularization-off culturalconsciousness, the feedback and interaction of readers and the growth ofwriter’s life experience, the author expounds the reason of Jin Yong’srevision and the influence of kung fu novel to the classicization ofpopular literature.
